ABSTRACT

Background: In Senegal, traditional fishing and fish farming are in decline. Considering the role of fish in the supply of animal proteins in Lower-Casamance, traditional fish farming should be analyzed in terms of biomass production and growth rate of the fish fauna to provide arguments for its recovery in this region of Senegal. This is achieved, fish ponds have been surveyed for mapping. Methods: The main species recorded were biometrically measured (individual biomass, total length and standard length) using an electronic balance and a wooden ichthyometer, respectively. Twenty individuals are chosen at random for the main species according to size classes caught by type of fishing carried out three times a week for a minimum of two months. The collected data is processed using the Excel spreadsheet and Statview 4.5 software. Results: Three fish ponds have been mapped and seven (7) main recorded species including: Mugil cephalus, Mugil curema, Lisa grandisquamis, Lisa bananensis, Lisa falcipinis, Elops lacerta and Sarotherodon melanotheron. The annual biomass produced per pond varies from 0.21 to 0.24 tonnes / ha and the total production from 1.08 to 5.75 tonnes. The individual biomass of the main fish species varies between 10 and 764.4 g. Elops lacerta is the species with larger individuals and larger biomass, followed by mullet group, particularly Mugil cephalus and Lisa grandisquamis. Conclusion: Among other results, the growth rates noted are isometric for all major fish. On the basis of these results, the yields of traditional fish farming are low, but the quality of the fish produced in Bandial as well as the growth rate noted in fish militate in favor of a revival of pisciculture in Casamance. In addition, the condition factors indicate good environmental conditions for all fish species. The revival of this fish farming will have to rely on the valorization of the endogenous knowledge of the producers and the contribution of food to boost the growth of the fish towards an increasing rhythm.

Key words: Fish, production, biomass, growth rate, recovery.
