ABSTRACT

Background:
Once at the university, the Moroccan baccalaureate holders coming from schools which use Arabic as an exclusive language of teaching science subjects face a serious problem: they find themselves unable to follow or understand the lessons taught in French. Objectives: The aim of this study is to identify the main linguistic difficulties which can prevent the students from succeeding in their training, to determine their specific needs and finally to propose solutions susceptible to solve the problem. Methods: We conducted a survey at the Faculty of Sciences in El Jadida (Morocco) using two questionnaires: the first one was devoted to the student “SVTU” (Life, Earth and Universe Sciences) stream; whereas, the second questionnaire was devoted to the teachers of this stream. The data were collected in April 2016. Results: The confrontation of the opinions of the two actors surveyed, in particular teachers and students, confirmed that the latter have real difficulties in following and managing their university training in French both in writing and in speaking. It also identified specific language needs of students in difficulty and the strategies adopted by their teachers to meet their needs. Conclusions: Results have shown that, as opposed to “SVTU” teachers who are able to teach in French without any problems, almost all students surveyed (84%) say that they have problems with the language of instruction that is French and that these problems are intra and extra-linguistic. Difficulties in teaching the two main subjects of the “SVTU” discipline, biology and geology, are particularly high, at 58%.
