ABSTRACT

Background: Morocco’s Bryophytes investigations still
relatively in a few number. Indeed, few studies have addressed this topic. Assessment of bryological biodiversity in Moroccan wetlands is thus a research orientation that we started with the Ouzoud waterfalls in the High Atlas. The region rises to 1060 m a.s.l. and is in a semi-arid bioclimate with fresh variant. Objectives: The exploration of the study area aims to draw up an exhaustive list of bryological diversity. Méthodes: Four transects were explored along water sources, crossing the spontaneous vegetation around the falls or in the surrounding dense to moderately dense olive groves. Along each transect, we conducted a systematic sampling with a stop and a crop in each encountered settlement. Results: The identification has allowed us to find 46 species of bryophytes mosses including 40 species belonging to 26 genera and 16 families (87%), 5 species of liverworts belonging to 5 genera and 5 families (11%), and finally 1 single species of hornwort (2%). The first transect brings out the highest number of bryophytes given its proximity to the water sources. Comparison with previous studies showed that Ptychomitrium glyphomitrioides (Balsamo and Not.) Vent. and Bott. is observed for the first time in Morocco and that 12 species are newly observed in the region. Conclusions: The number of bryophytes recorded is significant despite the deterioration of environmental conditions. A long term study of the site is recommended to establish the dynamic evolution of the bryological flora of the area.
