ABSTRACT

Background : The assessment of the suitability of a site for marine aquaculture is important, because each specie has its own tolerance levels and each type of farming structure has been designed to support a range of environmental conditions. Objective: The present work is a contribution to the simultaneous use of remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS) for the development of a model that integrates environmental parameters, providing a decision support tool for the selection of new sites for aquaculture. Method: Five parameters are used: sea surface temperature, water depth, concentration of chlorophyll-a, water turbidity and significant wave height. Since these parameters do not have the same importance in determining the aquaculture potential of a zone, different weights have been assigned to them using Analytic Hierarchy Process developed by Saaty. Results: We carried out the work in two levels: first, a zoning was realized all over the Moroccan coast using medium spatial resolution images (from 2002 until 2018), and which have shown that the south of Morocco has the most suitable areas for the farming of the oyster, the mussel and the clam. Then, a mapping of the aquaculture potential of the Agadir region was realized, using high resolution images (from 2013 until 2018), and showed that this region offers 58.700 ha of a potential zone for the seabass farming all along the coast, as well as an area of 704 ha suitable for the shellfish farming in the south of this region. Conclusion: A resolution sensitivity analysis was performed and which proved that using a high resolution gives better results. The model can be updated by integrating future complementary databases
