ABSTRACT

Background: Population growth and the need to meet the food needs of the populations are exerting great pressure on the agricultural soils of the outskirts of Libreville. Objective: The present study aims to assess the agro-pedological potential of these soils. Composite samples were taken from the depths; 0-20 cm, 20-40 cm, 40-60 cm, 60-80 cm, and 80-100 cm. The following analyzes were carried out: the texture was determined by the Robinson pipette method in accordance with the AFNOR NF X31-107 standard, the pH by electrometry in a sol / solvent ratio of 1/5, the phosphorus by the method Olsen, in accordance with standard NF ISO 11263, exchangeable bases and cation exchange capacity by the Metson method, as described by standard AFNOR NF X31130, organic carbon by the Black and Walkley method and total nitrogen by the Kjeldahl method. Results:  The results obtained show that: the sampled soils are sandy, with a sand content of up to 78%, they are very acidic on the surface with pH values below 5.5. All the surface samples have organic carbon levels between 14.2 and 14.6g / kg, more than 60% of the surface samples are deficient in nitrogen and phosphorus. All the samples have a very low mineral reserve of between 2.9 and 5.8 cmol + / kg, the sum of basic cations does not exceed 3.5 cmol + / kg, and the level of surface saturation is around 21%, which denotes the presence of exchangeable aluminum in the soil. It therefore appears that the high surface acidity, chemical poverty and very low mineral reserves constitute major constraints to the development of crops on these soils. Also for obtaining good yields, the practice of liming and appropriate organic amendments will be necessary.
