ABSTRACT

Background: Funerals are very often an occasion that deeply mobilizes human societies in general and African societies in particular. It occupies a special place both individually and socially. This research focuses on the dynamics and social changes in funeral rites in Avejεn’s Aja at Tͻviklεn. Objective: The main objective of this work is to analyze the social determinants of the current configurations of funerary ritual semiology in the Aja d’Avejassun at Tͻviklassun. The aim is to appreciate traditional funeral rites and to understand the relationship between the new rites and the links of communication and interdependence between the living Aja and their ancestors. Methods: The empirical phase of the work lasted six months of immersion during which qualitative surveys were carried out with actors composed of community leaders, elderly people, fâ priests, vodu dignitaries, community aunts, gravediggers, young people, mourning married women and unmourned married women. A total of seventy-five (75) individuals were identified using reasoned choice and quota techniques. Information is collected using semi-directional maintenance techniques and observations; then manually stripped, processed and analyzed according to evolutionary and systemic approach. Results: After analyzing the data, the results show that funeral rites are being abandoned today in favor of other practices in the borough. Four factors explain these dropouts, including: social determinants, political, cultural and economic determinants. Conclusion: Through this research, it emerges that the rites of death are neither optional, at least in principle, nor delivered to the whims of everyone, and that they are what must be done and what must not be done. Nevertheless, the said rites are evolutionary. In traditional societies, they were the most accurate and stable. Today, we realize that they are changing and here and there, they seem to be fading into a kind of surprising desacralization.
Key words: social change, rites of aggregation, separation, Aja, Avejεn rites.
