ABSTRACT

Context: Ambanja, located in the northern part of Madagascar, is a new source of demantoid variety of andradite garnet, ranging in color from green, yellowish-green to brownish-green. An important deposit of andradite, containing demantoid varieties, has been mined approximately 2.5 km west of the village of Antetezambato in northern Madagascar since the beginning of 2009. Geologically, the study area belongs to the Diego-Suarez Basin. Objectives: The objective of this study is to characterize the mineral elements present in the skarn deposit within the limestone series, focusing on the demantoid variety of andradite garnet from Antetezambato, Ambanja. Methods: We employed the energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence analysis method for our study. Samples were collected in the DIANA region, specifically in the AMBANJA district. The analysis was conducted at the OMNIS Laboratory in Antananarivo, Madagascar. Results: The analysis of demantoid garnet revealed high concentrations of calcium, iron, and silicon compared to other elements. Calcium content ranged from 2007 ± 16,6 mg/kg to 2518 ± 21,2 mg/kg, silicon from 330 ± 2,5 mg/kg to 779 ± 12,2mg/kg, and iron from 629 ± 6,5 mg/kg to 1452 ± 13,0 mg/kg. The calcium content in the three samples was significantly higher than other chemical elements, suggesting that our demantoid garnet belongs to the calcic group, specifically the andradites. Additionally, garnet mineralization known as "Andradites" was observed in the red sandstone. Other elements such as aluminum, phosphorus, magnesium, copper, nickel, and arsenic were present in lesser quantities. Conclusions: The four demantoid garnets exhibited variable concentrations, with a high calcium concentration. Moreover, magnesium, nickel, copper, and lead were generally present in low amounts.
Keywords: Deposit, garnet, demantoid, Antetezambato, mineral elements and skarn.
