ABSTRACT

Introduction:
In DR Congo the rate of maternal exclusive breastfeeding is of 36% for an average duration of 20.5 months in the whole country with a great variability observed according to the environment. The situation of militaries’ wives on the practice of exclusive breastfeeding is not very well known and was the subject of this study. Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the practice of exclusive breastfeeding among the wives of soldiers at Camp Saïo. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 306 children of Saïo Camp soldiers. The survey used a semi-structured questionnaire addressed to the children's mothers. Results: The prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding up to 6 months as recommended by the WHO found in our study is 69.3% and that of exclusive breastfeeding up to 4 months is 30.7 %. And the factors found that would influence exclusive breastfeeding up to 6 months were the place of birth of the child in the maternity ward or at home, mothers with no level of education and primary level, mothers non-commissioned officers and officers, mothers with military and crafts professions as well as the age of 0-1 year of the child. Conclusion: The practice of exclusive breastfeeding among soldiers’wives at Saïo Camp is slightly down compared to the average for the province of South Kivu. A sensitization effort should be carried out and supported by health workers and the military community.
