BSTRACT

Background: Endogamy is a marital behavior that consists in choosing the spouse within the same group taken into account as a priority for the individual. This type of union is strongly influenced by ethnographic, socio-economic and geographical conditions. Objectives: The objective of this study is to determine the level of geographic endogamy according to the birth environment in the population of northern Morocco, whose data are still fragmentary. Methods: The study was conducted during 2015, and involved a sample of 617 couples with informed consent. This is a retrospective survey in which the interview method was used based on the social anthropological approach, combined with a collection of data on a previously established questionnaire. Results: The results show a very high rate of endogamy (86%). This behavior is strongly perpetuated in the first and second generation than in the third generation, however it is present in both rural and urban areas with a very small difference. Conclusion: Geographic endogamy has direct consequences on the distribution, structure and heterogeneity of the genetic flow of the population. This may indirectly affect public health, because it presents a risk to gene frequency stability as well as genotypic frequencies.
Keywords: endogamy, north Morocco, generation, rural, urban.
