ABSTRACT

Introduction: This article presents sarcoidosis as a prevalent disease that affects multiple systems and is characterized by the development of non-necrotizing epithelioid granulomas in different organs of the body. The salivary glands and cervical lymph nodes are the most commonly affected organs in the head and neck region, although involvement of the oral mucosa is rare. Objective: The objective of this article is to describe the case of a patient with xerostomia, oral lesions, and bilateral parotid gland enlargement, with a diagnosis of systemic sarcoidosis being made based on the histopathological examination of a biopsy from the minor salivary gland. Results: The described patient exhibits characteristic symptoms of sarcoidosis, such as xerostomia, oral lesions, and parotid gland enlargement. Histopathological examination of a biopsy from the minor salivary gland confirms the diagnosis of systemic sarcoidosis, revealing the presence of non-necrotizing epithelioid granulomas. Conclusion: Sarcoidosis can affect the oral cavity, although it is rare. This case highlights the importance of considering sarcoidosis as a potential diagnosis in patients presenting with unusual oral symptoms such as xerostomia, oral lesions, and salivary gland enlargement. Histopathological examination of a biopsy from the minor salivary gland can be crucial in confirming the diagnosis of systemic sarcoidosis.
Keywords: Oral cavity, sarcoidosis, granuloma, mucosa.
